Sleeping Beauty Castle

05232016

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA was designed using the Neuschwanstein Castle in Europe as inspiration, and officially opened on July 17, 1955.

The castle is only 77 feet high and was designed to appear taller through forced perspective. There are conflicting reports, date wise, but sometime between 1957 and 1959, guests were first allowed to walk through the castle and view dioramas depicting the story of Sleeping Beauty. The dioramas were designed by Eyvind Earle, production designer for the Sleeping Beauty film, and were redesigned in 1977 to resemble the window displays on Main Street, U.S.A. The dioramas were redesigned again in 2008 returning the style of Earle, and using a technology that allows guests to walk through three-dimensional, interactive displays containing special effects.
