Tomorrowland Speedway

05242016.

The Tomorrowland Speedway in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom is based on Autopia at Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. The attraction allows guests to drive their own two-seat race cars around a 4/10 mile, four lane track. Upon opening on October 1, 1971, the ride was originally called the Grand Prix Raceway, sponsored by Goodyear, and designed to look like an international car race. In 1973, the ride’s track was expanded and then shortened in 1987 to make way for Mickey’s Birthdayland. Sometime during 1996 and 1999, the ride was renamed the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway and rethemed/redesigned with a futuristic feel. In 2009, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ended their sponsorship of the attraction and “Indy” was dropped from the name of the attraction.
